Public Betting Trends
According to oddsmakers from online sports book BetNow.eu, the Aggies are 16.5-point favorites to beat the Blazers. The total, meanwhile, sits at 45.5 points. As of this writing, 60% of the public betting tickets wagered on this matchup are on the Aggies.
UAB Blazers
UAB redshirt freshman QB Tyler Johnston III completed 14-of-27 passes for 207 with one interception and three interceptions in Saturday’s 26-23 win over Southern Miss. Johnston III was lights out last week against UTSA in the place of the injured A.J. Erdely, but it was a different story on Saturday when the redshirt freshman didn’t take of the ball (three interceptions) and averaged 7.7 yards per pass attempt. To be fair, he was able to run for a touchdown, but Johnston won’t be able to be this careless to have any chance at an upset at Texas A&M next week.
Texas A&M Aggies
Texas A&M sophomore QB Kellen Mond completed 19-of-28 passes for 236 yards with three touchdowns and a pick in a 38-24 victory over Ole Miss on Saturday. Mond also added a rushing score, so it was a four-touchdown day for the talented sophomore. The last two games were a bit of an adventure — to put it nicely — for Mond, and while this came against one of the worst defenses in football, the signal-caller was much, much improved in this one with his accuracy, pocket presence and decision-making. When Mond plays like this, the Aggies are very difficult to beat. He will face off against UAB next Saturday.
Betting Trends
UAB
The Blazers are 6-1 against the spread in their last seven games coming off a win and 7-1 ATS in their last eight games against an opponent with a winning record.
Texas A&M
The Aggies are 7-1 against the spread in their last eight home games and are 8-3 at the betting window in their last 11 games overall.
Prediction
I’m going to take a flier on the road dog that is 9-1 on the year and viewing this as a massive opportunity to earn a signature win for the program. UAB is 19-7-1 against the spread in its last 27 games overall and 5-2-1 ATS in its last eight games played in November. The Blazers’ strength offensively is their rushing attack, which ranks 17th in the nation in rushing yards per game (238.1). They also own the No. 4 scoring defense in the country, allowing 13.2 points per contest. Granted, these numbers come against Conference USA opponents but the bottom line is that this UAB team runs the ball and plays good defense. Give me the points on principle.
