ND at PITT

Notre Dame hopes to rebound from its embarrassing loss to Navy last weekend when the Irish head to No. 8 Pittsburgh to face the Panthers at 8PM ET from Heinz Field.

Bet Notre Dame at Pittsburgh
The Irish are 6-3 on the season but just 2-7 against the spread. The Irish have failed to cover the spread in their last three games and in seven of their last eight. Pittsburgh has won two of the last three meetings in this series.

Pittsburgh is 8-1 for 2009 with a 6-2 mark against the spread. The Panthers have won four straight overall and covered in their last three. Pitt is 5-0 at home, winning by an average of 21 points.
Oddsmakers from online sports book Sportsbook.com have made Pittsburgh 6.5-point home favorites over Notre Dame on Saturday night. The over/under total for this game has been established at 59.

It would be tough to pick Notre Dame in this game as the Fighting Irish have not played to a high standard this season against a fairly weak schedule. The Panthers have an offense that can match Notre Dame’s as the Panthers are scoring 34.6 points per-game and racking up 408 yards per-game.

Defense is where the differences show, as the Panthers are giving up just 17 points per-game while the Irish are allowing 23. The Panthers have been great against the run, keeping teams to just 106 yards per-outing. The Irish are getting beat through the air, allowing over 2,100 yards passing through nine games.

Jimmy Clausen will face a lot of long third down situations on Saturday and need to keep his offense on the field in order for Notre Dame to cover. On the other side, Pitt’s quarterback, Bill Stull will have to match Clausen’s effort. Stull has thrown for 1,879 yards with 17 touchdowns and four interceptions. Dion Lewis has been the Panthers’ workhorse with 1,139 yards rushing and 12 touchdowns, but he may be limited against the Irish, who will look to stack the box against him. If Stull can avoid mistakes and manage the game well, Pitt should have no problem covering the spread.

As bad as Notre Dame may need to win this game, it appears the Charlie Weis ship is sinking, therefore we suggest a pick of Pittsburgh to cover and suggest a pick of the under 59.
