Huskers survive Northwestern
Nebraska had another close call last weekend, edging Northwestern at home by a score of 13-10. The Cornhuskers are now 4-2 on the season, 2-1 in the Big Ten, 1-5 against the spread and 4-2 with the under.
Despite a lot of buzz coming into 2019, the Nebraska offense has been underwhelming this year. The Huskers are averaging just 28.7 points and 418.3 yards per game this year while the defense is giving up 26.5 points and 383.8 yards per game. Nebraska has some concerns coming into this game, as quarterback Adrian Martinez is dealing with a knee injury. Listed as questionable, he was in pads on Wednesday for practice. Martinez has thrown for 1,245 yards and seven touchdowns while rushing for a team-high 341 yards as well. Leading receiver JD Spielman is also questionable with a knee injury. He has 21 catches for 410 yards and a score this year.
Gophers trying to crack the rankings
Minnesota is off to a surprising 5-0 start to the season following a 40-17 win over Illinois at home last weekend. The Gophers are 2-0 in the Big Ten this far while going 2-2-1 against the spread and 3-2 with the over.
The Golden Gophers are relying on a solid defense this year. They are giving up 27.2 points per game, but allowing only 314.4 yards per game. Offensively, Minnesota is posting 35.8 points and 409 yards per outing. Rodney Smith has rushed for 536 yards and three scores to lead the offense while Tanner Morgan has thrown for 1,250 yards and 13 touchdowns. Rashod Bateman is his top receiver. Bateman has 23 catches for 537 yards and four touchdowns.
College Football Betting Trends
Nebraska
The Cornhuskers are 21-10-1 against the spread in their last 32 road games, but just 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games following a win.
Minnesota
Minnesota is 4-1 against the spread in its last five conference games, but just 5-11-1 ATS in their last 17 games following a cover.
Prediction:
The home team has won three straight in this series and is 2-0-1 against the spread in those games. Nebraska has a 4-2 record, but the Cornhuskers still feel like a disappointment. They haven’t found a groove where the offense and defense have played well. Last week they couldn’t do much of anything against Northwestern. They also barely survived at Illinois. Minnesota, on the other hand, has been gradually improving week to week. The Gophers have gained confidence and it showed in last week’s 23-point win over the Illini. This game is the biggest game Minnesota has had in some time. It gives them a chance to actually be a contender in the Big Ten West and make them deserving of a top 25 ranking. With Nebraska not being at 100 percent with key players, I expect the Gophers to take advantage of that and really punch Nebraska in the mouth from kickoff.
College Football Week 7 Prediction: Minnesota -7.5
