Georgia is coming off an 8-5 season where it went 5-3 in the SEC but dealt with a number of injuries. Clemson went 11-2 last season and 7-1 in the ACC, with its lone conference loss coming against Florida State. Clemson got a 38-35 win over Georgia last year, snapping a five-game losing streak to the Bulldogs that dated back to 1991.
Trends show that Clemson is 8-3 against the spread in its last 11 road games while Georgia is 2-8-1 ATS in its last 11 overall and 1-4 ATS in its last 5 non-conference contests. Clemson has hit the under in five of its last six against SEC opponents.
According to oddsmakers from BetDSI, Georgia is favored at home in this game, as it has odds of -7.5 points against Clemson. The over/under total has been set at 57.5 points (View Matchup). The opening odds for this game had Georgia as a 9.5-point favorite, but the spread steadily dropped before holding at 7.5 points. The over/under total opened at 59 points before slowly working down to 57.5 points.
Georgia’s biggest question for the season is at quarterback as the Bulldogs have to replace Aaron Murray. Attempting to do that will be Hutson Mason, who saw action last year while Murray was injured. Helping the process is stud back Todd Gurley, who had just under 1,000 rushing yards in 2013 despite missing several games with ankle issues. Defensively, the Bulldogs have an impressive 10 starters back this year. Problem is, last year’s defense struggled, allowing 29 points and 375.5 yards per game. Still, Ramik Wilson, is a top-notch linebacker that had 133 tackles last year and he can help right that ship.
Clemson has had one of the stronger offenses in recent years, but the Tigers will be challenged to live up to that this year with explosive talent like Sammy Watkins gone and a new quarterback taking over. Cole Stoudt will be the new man under center. He does have a veteran line in front of him to help the transition. Defensively, Clemson allowed just 22.2 points and 356.7 yards per game last year. The Tigers have a strong front seven, returning five starters, including end Vic Beasley, who had 13 sacks in 2013.
