GREENVILLE, N.C. (AP) -Daniel Fountain had 16 points to help UNC Wilmington hold off East Carolina 71-67 on Saturday night.
The Seahawks (8-4) were up 62-59 after Gabe Blair's foul shot for East Carolina with 6:50 to go. That's when they took off on an 8-3 run over the next three minutes to take control and go up 70-62.
T.J. Carter and Josh Sheets hit 3-pointers and Fountain followed with a layup.
The Pirates (4-6) made one last run. Darrell Jenkins had a 3-pointer and John Fields a layup to get East Carolina within 70-67 with 1:02 to go.
After a miss by UNC Wilmington's Chad Tomko, East Carolina had two chances to tie. However, 3-point tries by Sam Hinnant and Jenkins were off the mark.
Todd Hendley made a foul shot with four seconds left to seal the game for UNC Wilmington.
The loss spoiled the effort of East Carolina's John Fields, who finished with 26 points on 13 of 17 shooting. Fields also had five rebounds and four blocks.
Hendley added 15 points and 9 rebounds for the Seahawks. Vladimir Kuljanin had eight points and 10 rebounds.
