NEW YORK (AP) -Freshman forward Justin Burrell had 19 points and 12 rebounds to lead St. John's to a 68-56 victory over Long Island University on Wednesday night.
D.J. Kennedy added 18 points and Larry Wright had 10 for the Red Storm (4-0).
Jaytornah Wisseh led the Blackbirds (3-2) with 18 points, while Kellen Allen had 13 and Eugene Kotorobai 10.
Long Island got within 35-30 on a jumper by Allen with 15:02 to play, but Kennedy, another freshman, hit a 3-pointer to start a 7-0 run. The closest the Blackbirds got was 52-44 on two free throws by Allen with 4:58 to go.
Anthony Mason Jr., the Red Storm's leading returning scorer and rebounder, played for the first time this season after missing three games with a sprained left ankle. With 14 minutes to play he was knocked to the court and when he got up he was limping, favoring the same leg he had injured in practice. Mason, who never returned to the game, had four points on 2-for-9 shooting in 20 minutes.
