NEW YORK (AP ) – Former college coaches Pete Carril, Jim Phelan and Debbie Ryan have received the Lapchick Character Award.
Each spent at least 29 years at one school and they combined to win more than 2,000 games while overseeing programs considered as strong academically as they were successful on the court.
The awards on Thursday were presented by a group that recognizes those who have shown the character traits of Joe Lapchick, the late Hall of Famer who coached St. John’s and the New York Knicks.
Carril won 514 games at Princeton, a 29-year run that included 13 Ivy League titles and 11 NCAA tournament appearances.
Phelan won 830 games in 49 seasons at Mount St. Mary’s, the second-longest tenure ever at one school.
Ryan coached at Virginia for 34 years, winning 739 games with three Final Four appearances.
