CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -Andrew Goudelock scored 17 points to help The College of Charleston hold on to beat Southern Illinois-Edwardsville 72-66 in the first round of the ESPN/Charleston Classic on Friday.
Charleston (1-0) made only 12 of 27 free throws, but compensated on the defensive end by forcing 24 turnovers en route to victory.
Southern Illinois-Edwardsville (0-1) got 21 points from Mark Yelovich and 19 from Barry Wellington, who scored 14 of his 19 points in the first half on 5 of 7 shooting from the field. The game was Southern Illinois-Edwardsville’s Division-I debut.
In a game that was close throughout, Goudelocks running jump shot from the lane with 48 seconds to play all but clinched it for Charleston.
advancing to the championship game at 4 p.m. on Sunday.
