NEWARK, N.J. (AP) -Eugene Harvey hit a one-handed 28-footer at the buzzer to lift Seton Hall to a 53-51 victory over St. Peter’s in the season opener for both teams on Friday night.
Wesley Jenkins, who scored 16 points for St. Peter’s, had made a spinning jumper in the lane with 3.6 seconds left to give the Peacocks a 51-50 lead.
Seton Hall pushed the ball up the floor and Harvey, who also finished with 16 points, launched the winning 3-pointer.
Robert Mitchell added 11 points for Seton Hall, including four in the final minute.
The Pirates’ Jeremy Hazell, one of the nation’s top scorers a year ago at 22.7 points per game, was held without a field goal and finished with two points.
It was the 14th straight time that Seton Hall defeated their in-state rivals in a series dating to 1932. The Pirates own a 58-23 series lead.
