 POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. (AP) - Spongy Benjamin had 21 points and 17 rebounds for his third career double-double to lead the Marist men's basketball team in an 89-78 win over Delaware Sunday.
David Devezin had 16 points and six assists, while Dejuan Goodwin and freshman guard Jay Gavin finished with 13 points apiece for Marist (1-0). Ryan Stilphen contributed 11 points.
Marist shot 52.5 percent from the field and outrebounded Delaware by a 44-30 margin. Delaware threw 44.1 percent for the game.
Herb Courtney led Delaware (0-1) with 24 points and 7 rebounds and Brian Johnson scored 23.
The score was tied four times and a total of 57 fouls were called by the end of the game.
In the 2006-07 season, Marist won a program-record 25 games, earned its first outright Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference regular-season championship and won its first postseason game.
