Smith made the announcement Thursday night and declined to discuss specific reasons for the suspension.
The 6-foot-3 junior from Canada is Minnesota’s most versatile offensive player. He averaged 9.4 points last season but was going to be relied upon more heavily this year with the departure of seniors Lawrence Westbrook and Damian Johnson.
It’s a tough blow for the Golden Gophers, who face a challenging schedule early in the season. They open at home on Friday night against NCAA tournament team Wofford and face Siena on Monday before leaving for a tournament in Puerto Rico that includes West Virginia and North Carolina.
