STANFORD, Calif. (AP) -Mike Montgomery, the winningest coach in Stanford men's basketball history, will return to the school as an assistant to the athletic director.
Montgomery, who 393 games in his 18 years with the Cardinal, will begin his new job Sept. 4. He will be responsible fund raising and public relations while also serving as a mentor to Stanford's coaching staff.
``Mike Montgomery will be a tremendous asset to our program in a number of ways,'' athletic director Bob Bowlsby said. ``His wealth of knowledge and experience as an 18-year coach at Stanford University is something from which the entire athletic department will benefit.''
Montgomery led Stanford to 16 postseason appearances, including 10 straight trips to the second round of the NCAA tournament before leaving to take the coaching job for the NBA's Golden State Warriors in 2004.
Montgomery coached two seasons in the NBA and spent the previous year as a television analyst. One of Montgomery's former assistants, Trent Johnson, is now the head coach for the Cardinal.
