INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – The NCAA’s board of directors has decided to back legislation that will toughen academic standards for men’s basketball players.
The decision came during Thursday’s quarterly meeting and now goes to the schools for comment.
The proposals include an assessment of incoming freshmen and requiring those who need additional academic help to earn three credit hours during the summer before they can enroll in the fall. School officials would also have to reassess the need for summer classes at the end of each school year.
Schools could then designate an eight-week summer period in which enrolled players could also attend eight hours per week of strength and conditioning training.
