LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) -Louisville athletic director Tom Jurich says he doesn’t plan to discipline basketball coach Rick Pitino for details that emerged during the extortion trial of a woman Pitino had a sexual encounter with seven years ago.
Karen Cunagin Sypher was found guilty Thursday of three counts of extortion, two counts of lying to the FBI and one count of retaliating against a witness after demanding millions from Pitino in exchange for her silence about their tryst at a Louisville restaurant in 2003.
Jurich said at a news conference Thursday that Pitino knew “his name would be dragged through the mud,” but praised Pitino for going to the authorities about the plot.
Jurich says he doesn’t anticipate the trial affecting Pitino’s coaching ability and that Pitino remains a “grand ambassador” for the school.
