A new organization of minority basketball and football coaches is calling for changes in NCAA eligibility standards set to be enforced in 2016.
The National Association For Coaching Equity and Development issued a statement to The Associated Press on Friday saying the changes disproportionately target minority and less affluent students.
Next year, the NCAA will set tougher standards for athletes to participate as freshmen. They include 10 core courses that must be completed before an athlete’s senior year in high school, and a grade-point average of at least 2.3 in 16 core courses, up from a 2.0 GPA.
NAFCED held its first annual meeting in Atlanta last weekend. The group is led by coaches such as Tubby Smith and John Thompson III.
