INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -The NCAA says Division I men’s basketball teams drew more than 27 million fans last season, the fourth-highest total in history but a slight decrease over the previous season.
The top five teams were Kentucky, Syracuse, Louisville, Tennessee and North Carolina. Either Kentucky or Syracuse has finished No. 1 in home attendance for the last 34 seasons.
With 334 teams playing 5,251 games, both records, Division I schools had a total attendance of 27,539,459 – down 227,652, or 133 per game, from 2008-09.
The Big Ten led the nation in attendance for the 34th straight year, averaging 12,591 per game.
When numbers from Division II and III are included, more than 32 million fans attended an NCAA basketball game last season, also No. 4 all-time.
