Arizona forward Derrick Williams played the final two months of his sophomore season with a broken right pinky, not a sprain, as the team reported.
Williams said he didn’t want teams to know that his finger was broken for fear someone might take a swipe at his hand. He essentially played with three fingers on his shooting hand with the broken digit wrapped together with the finger next to it in a large cast-like bandage.
Williams had some of his best games after the injury, shooting with both hands while leading the Wildcats to a regional final one year after they missed the NCAA tournament.
The Pac-10 player of the year and Wooden Award finalist has declared for the NBA draft and is projected as a lottery pick.
