SAN DIEGO (AP) – Federal prosecutors say one of the defendants in the University of San Diego sports bribery scandal warned a college basketball player about what would happen if he took a bribe to fix a game but didn’t deliver the results.
The San Diego Union-Tribune reports that Assistant U.S. Attorney Harold Chun made the statement to a federal magistrate judge Thursday to keep Steve Goria in detention and deny Goria’s request to be released on bond.
The judge granted the government’s request.
The hearing was part of a marijuana and sports bribery case in which former USD basketball star Brandon Johnson is accused of taking a bribe to influence a game for gamblers in February 2010.
Goria’s attorney Michael Berg said no credible threats were made.
