NEWARK, N.J. (AP) – North Carolina seemingly had Kentucky right where it wanted it in the East regional finals.
Down by double digits in the second half, the inexperienced and talented Tar Heels kept inching closer, five points, three and eventually a tie at 67 with 3:18 to play.
The prize was there and all they had to do was grab it. But they couldn’t and North Carolina was eliminated from the NCAA tournament a game short of the Final Four in a 76-69 loss to Kentucky on Sunday.
The Tar Heels and coach Roy Williams were left to limp back to Chapel Hill, knowing they just weren’t as good as another team filled with talented youngsters.
Williams will really have to limp. He seemed to be injured when Kentucky guard Brandon Knight fell into his right knee in the final 20 seconds after being fouled.
