CINCINNATI (AP) -Xavier bristles when anyone suggests it’s doing quite well for a mid-major school. There’s no mid-anything about the Musketeers.
Xavier is in the NCAA tournament’s round of 16 for the third straight year. Only one other school – Michigan State – can match that. And the Musketeers’ pre-eminence has nothing to do with upsets or surprises.
The small Jesuit university long ago decided to make the basketball program its calling card. The Musketeers play in a state-of-the-art arena on campus and enjoy big-program perks on how they travel and recruit. In all respects, it’s a major program.
Xavier plays Kansas State in the regional semifinals in Salt Lake City on Thursday.
