CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) -Sean Singletary's career at Virginia isn't over.
The school announced Saturday that it has already accepted an invitation to play in the inaugural College Basketball Invitational if it does not get a bid to the NIT.
The CBI is a new tournament that will involve 16 teams. It will be staged by The Gazelle Group, which is based in Princeton, N.J., and runs the 2K Sports College Hoop Classic that benefits Coaches vs. Cancer and the O'Reilly Auto Parts CBE Classic.
The NCAA invites 65 teams to its tournament and the National Invitation Tournament, which started in 1938, selects 32. The NIT reduced its field last season from 40.
The CBI intends to compete with the NIT for teams that did not make the NCAA's field of 65, but Virginia said it will give preference to the established tourney.
The Cavaliers (15-15) lost to Georgia Tech in the first round of the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament this week despite the presence of Singletary. The point guard this month became the third Virginia player selected to the All-ACC team three times.
Ralph Sampson and Bryant Stith are the others.
If Virginia winds up in the CBI, it will play a home game Tuesday night.
The fields for all three postseason tournaments will be announced Sunday.
