CHICAGO (AP) – Loyola of Chicago has fired basketball coach Jim Whitesell after seven seasons.
Whitesell led the Ramblers to a 109-107 record, including a 21-11 mark in 2006-07 and their first 20-win season since 1984-85, but they were just 50-70 in Horizon League play under him and finished eighth the past four years. They went 16-15 overall this season and 7-11 in the conference.
With one year left on his contract, athletic director Dr. M. Grace Calhoun says in a statement released Monday that Whitesell would have had difficulties recruiting and that an extension “would send a false signal of the level of competitive success” meriting one.
