BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) – Vermont basketball player Evan Fjeld will play in the America East Conference championship despite the recent death of his mother.
Fjeld’s mother Susan died Tuesday after a long battle with cancer.
The junior from Durham, N.C., says he’s been dealing with his mother’s illness all year and basketball has been an outlet for him.
Fans at Saturday’s title game against Boston University at the Patrick Gymnasium in Burlington will be asked for a moment of silence. The winner will get an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
Fjeld is averaging 10.7 points and 6.1 rebounds this season. He was given the option of sitting out the championship, but said his mother would have wanted him to play.
