OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) – When the NCAA tournament bracket comes out on Selection Sunday, there may be some long faces in states that have become used to cheering on their teams.
There’s a good chance that none of Oklahoma’s four Division I teams will make the 68-team field. It would be the first that has happened since 1981, and it would come in a year when Tulsa is hosting early-round games.
Other states with varying degrees of basketball tradition could miss out, too, including Illinois, Iowa, Mississippi and Oregon.
Not every state can put a handful of teams into the field, as New York, Ohio, Virginia, Florida and California figure to do. Traditional powers North Carolina and Arizona should be back in along with Kansas, UCLA, Duke and Georgetown – giving the District of Columbia representation that many states won’t.
