STONY BROOK, N.Y. (AP) - Carson Puriefoy scored 17 points and Stony Brook won its sixth straight, defeating Albany 75-70 in each team's regular-season finale Sunday.
The Seawolves (23-6, 14-2 America East Conference) trailed 65-64 at 4:17 after Albany's Mike Black hit two free throws. Stony Brook's Ron Bracey answered with a go-ahead jumper, and the Seawolves hit their last seven free throws to lock up the win.
With the loss and Hartford's win over Vermont, Albany (21-10, 9-7) falls into the fourth seed in the America East tournament. It'll face Maine in the first round Saturday.
Stony Brook had already assured itself the top seed in the tournament, and with the win, matched its best record ever in AEC play. The Seawolves play eighth-seeded Binghamton Saturday.
Stony Brook entered with the second-best defensive field goal percentage (36.8 percent) in the country, but Albany shot 56.5 percent (26 of 46).
