COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -President Barack Obama calls John Calipari to thank the Kentucky coach and his players for their help in raising more than $1 million in the “Hoops for Haiti” telethon.
Then the country’s No. 1 college basketball fan cautioned the Wildcats not to let their new position atop the polls go to their heads.
Obama says Kentucky should stay focused after taking over the top spot in the rankings this week. The Wildcats (19-0) play at South Carolina on Tuesday night.
Calipari and his players crowded around a white phone at the Colonial Life Arena when the president called.
The University of Kentucky raised more than $501,000 during the “Hoops for Haiti” telethon. Matching funds pushed that total past $1 million.
