WICHITA, Kan. (AP) – A former University of Kansas official who was in charge of the school’s fundraising has pleaded guilty to conspiracy for his role in the theft of more than $2 million of athletic event tickets.
Rodney Jones entered his plea Friday in federal court in Wichita, Kan., in a deal with prosecutors that shed new light on how authorities uncovered the massive fraud.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Richard Hathaway told the court the Internal Revenue Service noticed an inordinate amount of season tickets being sold by one broker. More than $975,000 was paid in cash to a friend of Jones. Agents rifled through trash at the friend’s house and discovered ticket stubs in consecutive order.
The 42-year-old Jones will be sentenced March 31.
