WICHITA, Kan. (AP) – A former Kansas athletics official has pleaded guilty to conspiracy for his role in a $2 million ticket-scalping scheme that brought down seven former university employees.
Former assistant athletic director Rodney Jones on Friday admitted his part in a scheme that began in 2005. His defense attorney says Jones “deeply regrets his involvement in this episode.”
The scheme unraveled last year, after the Internal Revenue Service noticed an inordinate amount of season tickets being sold by one broker. The broker’s checks for about $975,000 were cashed by Jones’ friend at the broker’s bank.
Prosecutors say Jones converted cash from the ticket sales into money orders to avoid currency reporting requirements. The 42-year-old Jones had been in charge of the university’s fundraising arm that uses ticket sales to contribute to scholarships.
