YPSILANTI, Mich. (AP) – Carlos Medlock scored 16 points Saturday to lead five Eastern Michigan players in double figures and help the Eagles post an 81-71 Mid-American Conference victory over Western Michigan.
Travis Lewis and James Matthews also had career highs with 15 points, Jarred Axon added 12 and Zane Gay had 10 for the Eagles (5-9, 1-1). The win snapped a five-game losing streak for Eastern Michigan, which had lost nine straight to Western Michigan.
David Kool and Joe Reitz scored 16 and 14, respectively, for the Broncos (7-8, 1-1).
Trailing 38-33 at halftime, Western Michigan opened the second half with a 14-4 run to take its first lead since being in front 11-10 eight minutes into the game.
The Eagles regained the lead 49-47 with 11:49 remaining on Matthews’ basket off a rebound. Eastern Michigan went on to lead by as much as 12 points with just under a minute to play.
Western Michigan played without head coach Steve Hawkins, who was recovering from the flu. His duties were handled by assistant coach Clayton Bates.
