The game was the first between the teams since the Celtics won Game 6 of the NBA finals in June for their first championship in 22 years and league-high 17th overall.
The Celtics dropped to 27-3, while the Lakers improved to 24-5 with their 12th straight home victory. They're 15-1 at home overall.
The victory was the 1,000th for Phil Jackson, enabling him to become the sixth coach in NBA history to reach that milestone. The 63-year-old Jackson has a career record of 1,000-423 in 17-plus seasons as coach of the Chicago Bulls and Lakers.
Kevin Garnett led Boston with 22 points and nine rebounds, and Paul Pierce had 20 points and 10 rebounds.

PHOENIX (AP) - Roger Mason hit a 3-pointer from the corner at the buzzer to give San Antonio its fourth straight victory and 10th in 12 games.
Amare Stoudemire had 25 points and 13 rebounds, and Shaquille O'Neal finished with 23 points and 12 rebounds for Phoenix.
O'Neal was 9-of-16 at the foul line to become the only player other than Wilt Chamberlain to miss 5,000 career free throws. Steve Nash had eight assists to become the 13th NBA player to reach 7,000 for his career. He also had 13 points.
Magic 88, Hornets 68
ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) - Hedo Turkoglu scored 20 points, and Dwight Howard had 12 points and 15 rebounds in Southeast-leading Orlando's sixth straight victory.
Rashard Lewis added 18 points, and Jameer Nelson had 14. David West had 13 points for New Orleans, and Chris Paul and Devin Brown each added 12. Paul's NBA-record steals streak ended at 108 games.
