MIAMI (AP) – Although their back-and-forth verbal jousts this summer may indicate otherwise, Orlando and Miami had heated history long before LeBron James moved to South Florida.
Greg Kite and Rony Seikaly fought like desperate heavyweights in the 15th round. Keith Askins spit near Brian Hill. Chris Gatling almost came to blows with Shaquille O’Neal. And that was just from the 1990s.
So, no, there’s nothing new about this Heat-Magic rivalry.
When the teams meet for the first time this season Friday night in Miami, a new chapter of the Sunshine State series begins. Orlando has won 15 of the last 20 games between the clubs, although all that came before Miami underwent its summer roster overhaul.
Says Orlando’s Dwight Howard, “We’re trying to take their heads off.”
