INDEPENDENCE, Ohio (AP) – Cleveand Cavaliers forward Anderson Varejao has been excused from training camp following his grandfather’s death in Brazil.
The team said Varejao has left for his home country, but did not indicate when he would return. The Cavs opened their first camp under new coach Byron Scott on Tuesday.
Varejao on Monday said he was still slowed after spraining his ankle during an exhibition game in Spain while preparing for this summer’s world championships. Varejao underwent an MRI and the team was going to monitor him closely.
Scott has high expectations for Varejao, who may play center this season following the departures of Shaquille O’Neal and Zydrunas Ilgauskas.
