MIAMI (AP) – When Erik Spoelstra took over as coach of the Miami Heat, he got one piece of advice from Pat Riley. In short, Riley told Spoelstra not to worry about feeling prepared for the job.
Ready or not, it was his.
The same holds true this season, Spoelstra’s third leading the Heat. After 90 wins in his first two years with a relatively unspectacular roster – except for Dwyane Wade, of course – Spoelstra is gaining control of a team that simply looks loaded. LeBron James, Chris Bosh and Mike Miller were added, Wade was kept, and the Heat are thinking title.
So ready or not, Spoelstra sees the challenge ahead.
Says Spoelstra, “It’s not just myself. As a coaching staff, we feel we’re ready for the opportunity.”
