CLEVELAND (AP) -The Cleveland Cavaliers have not offered Los Angeles Lakers assistant Brian Shaw – or anyone – a coaching contract, a person familiar with the search said.
The team has narrowed its field of candidates to “two or three” but will not be offering any of them the job Tuesday, said the person, who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the club is not publicly discussing its search.
Shaw, who has been on Phil Jackson’s staff for five seasons, is returning to Los Angeles following a two-day visit with the Cavs.
Shaw arrived on Monday to meet with owner Dan Gilbert. The team would prefer to have its coach in place by Thursday, when free agency opens and Cleveland attempts to re-sign two-time league MVP LeBron James.
Shaw’s agent, Jerome Stanley, told the Los Angeles Times by text that Shaw was “close to accepting deal” with the Cavs.
The Cavs have also had informal talks with Byron Scott. Michigan State coach Tom Izzo recently turned down a reported $30 million offer to coach in Cleveland.
