Tom Izzo will owe Michigan State $500,000 if he leaves to coach the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Cutting a check shouldn’t be a problem.
A person familiar with the discussions tells The Associated Press on Tuesday that Cavs owner Dan Gilbert has discussed parameters of a possible deal if a formal contract offer were offered to Izzo.
The person says a potential contract would pay Izzo up to $6 million a year for four or five seasons, but the use of one of Gilbert’s jets has not been discussed.
The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because details from the discussions were supposed to remain confidential.
The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer first reported Monday that Gilbert and Izzo discussed the framework of a deal, worth about $6 million a season for up to five years.
