NEWARK, N.J. (AP) -Prosecutors in New Jersey want a judge to finally sentence former basketball star Jayson Williams for covering up the shooting of a hired driver more than seven years ago.
The Hunterdon County Prosecutor’s Office filed the request Wednesday. Prosecutors cited Williams’ arrest over the Memorial Day weekend in North Carolina on an assault charge as the reason to put Williams behind bars.
The 41-year-old former NBA star has been free on bail. He was convicted in 2004 of covering up the 2002 killing of Costas Christofi. Sentencing has been delayed pending Williams’ retrial on a reckless manslaughter count.
Defense attorneys are seeking to overturn the cover-up conviction on grounds of racial bias.
