LOS ANGELES (AP) -Tex Winter, the longtime Los Angeles Lakers consultant and mentor to coach Phil Jackson, is recovering in a Kansas hospital from an apparent stroke.
Winter, 87, fell ill Saturday morning in Manhattan, where he was attending a reunion of Kansas State basketball team members, the Lakers said.
“The assessment today is some of his faculties are coming back and he’s improving,” Jackson said Sunday at the Lakers’ suburban practice gym.
Jackson said he heard Winter would be moved out of intensive care on Monday, spend a few more days in the hospital and then be moved to a care unit that specializes in rehabilitating stroke victims.
Before the Lakers’ playoff game at Utah on Saturday night, Jackson said he had spoken to Winters’ family and that Winter was resting.
Winter was head coach of the Houston Rockets from 1972-1974. In the 1980s, he worked as an assistant coach for the Chicago Bulls, where he began a long working relationship with Jackson.
