NEW YORK (AP) -The NBA’s referees union has criticized the league for fining an official who was involved in a dispute with Boston coach Doc Rivers.
Rivers was fined $25,000 Thursday for his postgame rant against Bill Kennedy, and the league also docked Kennedy an undisclosed amount. Rivers complained afterward that Kennedy goaded him into receiving a second technical foul and an automatic ejection.
The referees said in a release on Friday that Kennedy was doing what he’s supposed to do and that they were disappointed the league didn’t stand behind the official.
They also noted that Rivers had previously been penalized this season for his public complaints about the officiating.
