Blazers’ Matthews tears Achilles
PORTLAND, OR (TheSpread) – The Portland Trail Blazers championship hopes for this season took a big hit on Thursday night as guard Wesley Matthews tore his left Achilles tendon.
The injury to Matthews occurred early in the second half of Thursday’s game with the Mavericks. He went down without contact while driving to the basket. Matthews went to the ground and immediately grabbed his ankle. Following the game, Matthews had an MRI, which confirmed the tear. He will be out for the rest of the season.
According to oddsmakers at BetDSI, the Blazers are currently listed with 25/1 odds to win the NBA Finals. Currently Cleveland is favored with 11/5 odds while Golden State has 15/4 odds to win.
Matthews was having a strong year, averaging 15.9 points, 3.7 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.28 steals per game. Matthews is in his sixth-year with the team. He has averaged double figures each of the last five seasons, but he was averaging a career-best in rebounds this season. Portland is currently 41-19 on the season and the third seed in the Western Conference. The Blazers are 6.5 games behind Golden State for the best record in the conference.
