CAR-INDYCAR-CENTURY OF INNOVATION
INDIANAPOLIS - Over the last century, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway has become a world-famous race course. It's also become the proving ground for all kinds of innovations. It was here that rearview mirrors and seat belts were first used. And it was here that SAFER barriers were installed for the first time. Race officials are hoping that the next century brings even more innovations to the race world - as well as passenger cars. By Michael Marot.
LONG BEACH, Calif. - Shortly after landing on a long flight from France, Takuma Sato, like so many other passengers, turned on his cell phone. While the other passengers' phones dinged and ringed here and there, Sato's was going off like a winning slot machine. It was March 11 and while Sato was cruising above 30,000 feet, the ground in his native Japan had shook violently, setting off a catastrophic wave of destruction and water that left thousands dead. Once the initial jolt of the situation wore off, Sato decided to do two things: Climb back in his IndyCar to start driving again and set up a program to help the children of the quake. By John Marshall.
MILWAUKEE - Simona de Silvestro isn't a household name or have race victory on her resume. Yet the Swiss driver has established a firm foothold in the IndyCar series just five years after moving to the United States as a 17-year-old to pursue her dream of becoming a race car driver. By Chris Jenkins.
BARCELONA, Spain - As Formula One rolls into Europe at the Spanish Grand Prix, Sebastian Vettel's rivals are hoping a new tire compound and some offseason rule changes will help them put a dent in the German's dominance. Vettel has won three of the first four races and led a Red Bull 1-2 at the Turkish GP last time out to establish the team as favorites to retain both the drivers' title and constructors' championship.
