DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) – Kevin Harvick is out of the Daytona 500, leaving the Great American Race after just 22 laps because of engine failure.
Harvick, the 2007 Daytona 500 champion, had been one of the favorites in Sunday’s season opener after showing plenty of speed during Speedweeks.
Harvick was lined up behind Matt Kenseth when his engine blew, sending smoke bellowing from underneath his No. 29 Chevrolet.
Harvick, who finished third in last year’s Sprint Cup standings, says it’s a tough way to start the new season. He will finish 42nd in the opener.
