ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) -The Los Angeles Angels declined Wednesday to offer infielder Dallas McPherson a contract for next season, making him a free agent.
The decision was announced hours before Wednesday's midnight deadline for unsigned players on the 40-man roster.
The 27-year-old McPherson missed the entire 2007 season while recovering from back surgery. He was placed on the 60-day disabled list March 31, and activated Nov. 13.
Originally selected by the Angels in the second round of the 2001 free agent draft, McPherson has a lifetime batting average of .247 with 50 runs scored, 89 hits, 18 homers and 45 RBIs in 117 games. He appeared with the Angels in parts of the 2004, 2005 and 2006 seasons.
The decision left the Angels with three arbitration-eligible players - closer Francisco Rodriguez, infielder Maicer Izturis and outfielder Juan Rivera.
