LAS VEGAS (AP) -Scott Boras emerged from an elevator and strolled a few steps down the hall, followed by a surging pack of reporters eager for answers about his stable of star clients.
How many offers does Mark Teixeira have and does he want to play close to home?
Where is Manny Ramirez headed?
What kind of bidding can Derek Lowe expect now that CC Sabathia has agreed to a deal with the Yankees?
Baseball’s most powerful agent, Boras was all but trapped against the glass window of a gift shop off the Bellagio casino, with cameras rolling and dozens of microphones pressed toward his face.
Bad spot. Blocking traffic.
Within minutes, hotel security broke up the cramped interview session and escorted Boras to the Major League Baseball media workroom. A horde of reporters hustled behind, like some kind of Wild West stampede, as hotel guests dodged to the side and shook their heads.
er to retain free-agent catcher Jason Varitek.
Boras normally holds only one or two group sessions with reporters at the annual winter meetings, and they always make for a crazy scene. This one was a whopper, though.
Some highlights:
– Boras on Teixeira: “The considerations of his family, the economics, winning, all those are in the evaluation of what he wants to do.” The first baseman is thought to be drawing interest from the Los Angeles Angels, Boston, Washington, Baltimore and the Yankees. Boras said “numerous” teams have made offers, and the Nationals are known to have made an offer to the Maryland native.
– Boras on Ramirez: “I think there may be as many as 10 teams that need a 3-4 hitter in baseball and both he and Teixeira are drawing a lot of interest.”
– Boras on Teixeira’s comment that he’d like to have a deal completed by Christmas: “I didn’t watch that show.”
