ATLANTA (AP) - The Atlanta Braves had 16 position players on their roster for Friday's wild-card game against St. Louis and kept three starting pitchers active.
Manager Fredi Gonzalez said he wanted to have Tim Hudson and Mike Minor available in case starter Kris Medlen had unexpected problems in the bullpen.
Right-hander Cristhian Martinez, who appeared in 54 games and often was effective in long relief, was not on the 25-man roster. Joining closer Craig Kimbrel in the bullpen were left-handers Luis Avilan, Eric O'Flaherty and Jonny Venters and right-handers Chad Durbin and Cory Gearrin.
Catcher David Ross was expected to start instead of Brian McCann, who has a sore shoulder and sore knee. A third catcher, J.C. Boscan, also was on the roster.
The roster included eight infielders and five outfielders.
