SAN DIEGO (AP) -Padres right fielder Brian Giles had microfracture surgery on his right knee, which he hurt in mid-April.
Giles played with the injury until being forced onto the disabled list in late May. He returned in late June, and moved into the leadoff spot in the batting order.
The surgery was performed Wednesday, two days after the Padres lost a wild-card tiebreaker game at Colorado. The Padres had three chances to clinch the wild-card, and lost all three games.
Also Thursday, the Padres claimed infielder Luis Rodriguez off waivers from the Minnesota Twins and requested waivers on outfielder Brady Clark for the purpose of giving him his unconditional release.
Rodriguez played in 68 games for the Twins this year, hitting .219 with two home runs and 12 RBIs. He made 38 appearances at third base, 21 at second base and three at first base.
Clark was signed to a minor league contract on Aug. 16 and had his contract purchased from Triple-A Portland on Sept. 1. He hit .306 in 21 games with the Padres but struggled in center field on Monday night in place of injured Gold Glove winner Mike Cameron.
