DETROIT (AP) – Max Scherzer will start Game 1 of the AL division series for Detroit on Thursday, headlining the Tigers’ star-studded rotation for a second consecutive postseason.
Justin Verlander is slated for Game 2 at Baltimore, followed by David Price and Rick Porcello. Scherzer, Price and Verlander are the American League’s last three Cy Young Award winners.
Scherzer also started the playoff opener for the Tigers last year, after Verlander had been the team’s unquestioned ace in previous seasons. Scherzer went 18-5 with a 3.15 ERA in 2014.
Verlander (15-12) struggled for much of this season, but he pitched better in his final two starts. Price (15-12) was acquired from Tampa Bay at the trade deadline.
Porcello (15-13) reached a career high in wins but faltered a bit in September.
