CLEVELAND (AP) – Scott Atchison struggled but got three outs in the 10th inning as the Cleveland Indians moved within 2 1/2 games of Kansas City in the AL wild-card chase on Monday by completing a 4-3 win over the Royals in a game suspended on Aug. 31.
Atchison gave up a two-out RBI single to Nori Aoki before popping up Omar Infante with the tying run at second for his second save.
Cody Allen (6-4) got the win despite giving a tying homer in the ninth 23 days ago.
The Indians can close the gap on Kansas City further in the second game and during the scheduled three-game series.
The Royals, trying to make the postseason for the first time since 1985, dropped two games behind first-place Detroit in the AL Central.
Before storms hit Kansas City’s Kauffman Stadium last month, the Indians took a 4-2 lead in the 10th on pinch-hitter Lonnie Chisenhall’s two-out, two-run double off Royals closer Greg Holland (1-3).
