BOSTON (AP) Yankees manager Joe Girardi is hoping to get second baseman Starlin Castro back in a week after the infielder left Saturday’s game with a strained right hamstring.
Castro grabbed his leg rounding first heading to second on a double and left the game. He was sent to New York to be examined following a 6-5 loss to the Red Sox.
The club said he has a Grade 1 strain.
”It really depends on how he heals. Hopefully it’s not too long,” Girardi said. ”Hopefully it’s not more than a week, but I still think that’s pushing it.”
Castro has been one of team’s better hitters lately. He’s batting .273 with 21 homers and 69 RBIs.
Center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury was also injured Saturday, when he bruised his right knee sliding into a bullpen wall trying to make a catch. He’s was also sent back to New York and is listed as day-to-day.
Both the players are expected to meet the team Tuesday when it opens a series against the Tampa Bay Rays.
