TORONTO (AP) -Baltimore pitcher Daniel Cabrera was scratched from his next scheduled start and sent back to Baltimore to visit the team doctor after experiencing pain in his elbow during a side session Wednesday.
“He went out to throw a side today and he felt some discomfort and had some tingling in his elbow so they had to shut him down,” manager Dave Trembley said.
The right-hander had an MRI in late August after experiencing elbow pain, but it came back negative. The latest pain is in a different area, Trembley said.
Cabrera was 8-10 with a 5.25 ERA in 30 starts.
Right-hander Radhames Liz will move up one day to start Friday when the Orioles open a three-game series against the New York Yankees. Left-hander Chris Waters will start Sunday’s final regular season game at Yankee Stadium, but Trembley wouldn’t say who will handle the middle game.
“I don’t know who we’re going to pitch on Saturday,” Trembley said. “I don’t have any idea right now.”
to September 6. Guthrie, 10-11 with a 3.57 ERA in 29 starts, reported no pain after throwing from flat ground in the outfield Tuesday. Guthrie, who hopes to return next week, will play catch in the outfield again Thursday and could throw a bullpen session on Saturday.
“If we get to the bullpen session and it doesn’t feel right then I’ll be smart,” Guthrie said. “I’m not going to just pitch for the sake of pitching. Until the season is over, I’m going to just keep working just as though it were May and I’m trying to get back as quickly as I can.”
Also Wednesday, the Orioles put right-hander Dennis Sarfate on the 15-day disabled list. Sarfate is expected to have surgery to repair a fractured clavicle on Sept. 25, but intends to seek a second opinion from Dr. Lewis Yocum. Sarfate, 4-3 with a 4.74 ERA in 57 games, suffered the injury while moving into his Baltimore apartment in April, and has pitched hurt all season.
“Maybe he’ll be a little more careful next year,” Trembley said.
The Orioles currently have nine players on the disabled list, all of them pitchers.
“We’re all going to have to do a better job at getting these guys prepared for the whole season, getting them through September,” Trembley said. “We’re going to have to look at a lot of different areas.”
