KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -The Seattle Mariners will likely shut down pitcher Jarrod Washburn for the rest of the season because of a strained abdominal muscle.
The 34-year-old lefty made a one-inning relief appearance Tuesday night at Kansas City, his first outing since hurting himself July 30 in a start at Cleveland.
Washburn threw 18 pitches against the Royals, but was still bothered by the injury.
“I felt it warming up and on every pitch I threw, but I put up a zero and argued to stay in,” Washburn said Wednesday. “(Trainer) Rick Griffin noticed I was changing my arm angle a little and that’s not something you want to see. You don’t want to mess with anything like that. You do that you’re risking further injury.
“They’re smarter than I am. They said ‘no more.’ I guess I’m done for the year,” he said.
Washburn lost his last five decisions as a starter after winning July 27 at Toronto. He is 5-14 with a 4.69 ERA.
